Pre World War 1 marked the beginning of women wearing skirts. This was a great development as previously, women were uncomfortable in skirts and did not dare show themselves in public. During World War I, the Russian revolution swept away many of the old aristocratic families and women had to find ways of survival. Thus, skirts became a symbol of women’s advancement and it was not long before all women, especially women of the lower class, began to wear them.

As time passed and with the advent of industrialization, the fashion industry began to show more affluence among the rich and middle class. Women wearing one piece bathing suits were considered to be highly fashionable. Thus, the pre-World War one narrow style became even more popular among women who wanted to look glamorous and elegant. This fashion trend soon encompassed other segments of the society including children’s clothing, men’s fashion designing, bridal gowns, eveningwear and lingerie.

After the war, women’s clothes gained more freedom and their demand for greater freedom prompted the introduction of a wider variety of materials, colors and styles. This gave birth to the pre-world war one narrow skirt as women could now experiment with the look and feel they wanted to achieve. However, even today this fashion trend is still seen in fashion shows and in women’s boutiques. A wide variety of fabrics are used in making these dresses and they include denim, silk, lace, and cotton.
